The beginning of a new year—and a new decade, as it turns out—inspires us to take stock of where we’ve been and where we’re heading. For some, that means making a list of resolutions, and perennial favorites fall into the health and fitness category. Exercise. Eat better. Kick bad habits. Learn a new skill.

Taking time for a proper breakfast is a struggle. I usually grab a packaged granola bar and a yogurt as my daughter and I head out the door. She typically has a toaster waffle and a bottled smoothie to finish on the way to school. As it turns out, we’re not alone. The majority of Americans now aren’t bound to three traditional meals a day. NACS Daily recently shared findings from the 2019 “State of Snacking” report by Mondelez International and The Harris Poll in which 60% of those surveyed said they prefer to eat several small meals as opposed to a few large ones. What’s more, people said they’re looking for healthier options.

That’s where c-stores come in. Breakfast is a key daypart for c-store foodservice programs, and our cover story explores how some retailers are ramping up healthier offerings for customers looking for more than a bacon, egg and cheese biscuit.

Taking time for a proper breakfast is a struggle.

When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, quitting smoking usually lands among the top 10. E-cigarettes and other flavored tobacco products have helped many adult smokers wean themselves from combustible cigarettes. The downside of flavored e-cigarette products, however, is that many teens who have never smoked traditional cigarettes are vaping, risking their health. In “The Flavor Ban Boom,” we detail how local lawmakers—and at least one state—have reacted by banning flavored tobacco products for everyone, and in some cases restricting sales to one trade channel, promoting an unlevel playing field. At press time, the Trump Administration was weighing federal guidance on flavors and the minimum tobacco purchase age. NACS President and CEO Henry Armour was among the industry leaders invited to the White House in November to discuss the issue with President Trump.

The controversy around tobacco flavors and vaping could have a direct impact on c-stores wanting to capitalize on other emerging areas of trade. As I write this column, I am in Las Vegas for the first-ever NACS pop-up event: The Future of Cannabis in Retail. As more states legalize marijuana for recreational use, NACS wants to ensure that our industry is included in these new markets—and prepared for the changes coming our way. Look for coverage in the February issue of NACS Magazine and NACS Daily.

So back to those resolutions. At NACS Magazine, our 2020 editorial calendar is packed with feature stories that will inform and inspire. As we enter this new decade together, there are some exciting content and format changes in the works, too, so stay tuned—and Happy New Year!
