Meet Me at the Clamshell

You may know Winston-Salem for its tobacco, but the North Carolina town is also home to the last Shell station shaped like a clamshell in the U.S. Built in the 1930s, the bright yellow station remained open until the 1950s, became a repair shop for lawn mowers until the 1980s, and in 1976, was the first individual station in America to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The station is no longer a business, but is now a shrine to itself, housing memorabilia unique to the station, including newspaper announcements, a teddy bear, old Shell signs, a coffee mug and a tin of vintage Monkey Grip Patch.
