As a supplier member on the Political Engagement Committee, what does NACS political engagement mean to you, and what benefits have you experienced from being politically engaged?

Being a member of the committee has personally allowed me to engage with retailers and suppliers on current issues affecting our industry. In addition, participating in NACS Day on the Hill has given me the opportunity to engage with our congressional leaders. One year, I was even able to meet with the Speaker of the House! NACS Day on the Hill encourages us to have a seat at the table and make our voices heard with the members of Congress who make decisions that affect our businesses.

What federal legislative or regulatory issues in regard to the convenience store industry keep you up at night?

Swipe fees are extremely problematic to our industry. Retailers pay more in swipe fees than they make in pre-tax profit every year, which equates to their second highest operating cost. Additionally, the menu labeling regulations are another concern for our industry as more and more c-stores move into foodservice. Our industry wants to provide the nutritional information our customers want, but we should be able to do so in a way that is common sense. The FDA regulations that our industry must comply with are one-size-fits-all, which may work for a chain restaurant, but it’s burdensome on stores like ours that are each unique.

What c-store product could you not live without?
