The retail sector is facing no end of challenges—some are longstanding and familiar challenges; others are brought on by recent technological developments. With daily developments threatening the bricks versus clicks balance and increasing numbers of store closures, coupled with skills shortages and sluggish productivity, profitability is being squeezed and an atmosphere of uncertainty continues to grow. Yet, a greater focus on the deployment of technology in the workplace can offer retailers the opportunity to reshape their working practices and evolve key operations. Most notably, eliminating the transactional and operational aspects of the store manager role—and using AI to assist—can allow for greater focus on managing talent and shaping the customer experience. Essentially, the role shifts from transactional to consultative.
