What role in the community do you think convenience stores should play?

We have always looked at our stores as a community gathering place. We take pride in hearing neighbors talk about when they don’t see each other in their own yards, but always get a chance to catch up as they pick up their morning coffee.

What does NACS political engagement mean to you and what benefits have you experienced from being politically engaged?

The past decade has shown how important it is to speak up. When we see elections decided by a handful of votes, we can see how important it is to make our voices heard. If we do not step forward, someone else will be glad to step forward in our place.

What federal legislative or regulatory issue keeps you up at night?

Health care. When the ACA was adopted, it was a breakthrough for many of our employees and my father. Their pre-existing conditions made it complicated and expensive to find plans that would fill their needs. Witnessing the peace of mind that comes from knowing that they would have the health care they need was unparalleled. The ACA is an indispensably valuable tool, especially for smaller operators and their employees. I hope the upcoming terms protect and solidify the ACA as a valuable entity that will benefit all Americans.

What’s your favorite c-store treat?

Coffee and beef jerky are always on the list, but lately it seems that 5-Hour Energy could be a fifth food group in my life.
